Thank You

We are deeply honored by everyone who came and celebrated The Malaya Project's very first public exhibit during Downtown LA Artwalk. For over two years we have dedicated ourselves to sharing LGBTQ stories in the hopes that others will gain a better understanding of who we are as individuals.

Putting the event together wouldn't have been possible without the help from very generous companies, community organizations and especially all our participants who have been courageous enough to share their lives with us. A big thank you to Hatakeyama Gallery, FilAm ARTS, Barangay Los Angeles, APAIT Health Center, SUSPEND Magazine, ELEV8, Le'kur Lips and Spirit House.

Here's a little peek.

Please join us at the Opening Reception and say hi!

Multicultural Community Center

200 MLK Jr. Student Union, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA. 2nd floor.

OPENING RECEPTION (April 26, 2012 8pm-10pm) to celebrate APA history and experiences. Reception will include FREE FOOD and PERFORMANCES.

EXHIBIT OPEN FROM APRIL 26 - MAY 7

ABOUT MAKING WAVES:
Inspired by the different waves of Asian Pacific Americans throughout history, Making Waves celebrates the diverse experience and histories of the APA community. Making Waves is an opportunity to challenge the category and identity of ‘APA’. We remember and acknowledge the ongoing APA struggles and movements while examining closer what it means to be APA. Identity categories such as APA can not only lead to affirmation of identity and coalition building, but also erasure of different cultures, ethnicities, and languages. With this exhibit we acknowledge and resist against this erasure, and strive for a more complex understanding of Asian Pacific American communities. Through the Making Waves exhibit, we hope to not only swim through the rich histories and experiences of the APA community, but also celebrate the way we, as APA individuals and communities, make our own waves in the forms of new ideas, understandings, and activisms.

TULAY

This week, The Malaya Project will join Barangay LA's 3-day art gallery (May 26-28) focused on preventing youth suicide within the Filipino community.  We are very proud to be part of making a difference through art.  We will also be featuring and selling one of our photographs at the gallery.

“TULAY: Bridge to Help Fight Youth Suicide” will be held at Monk Space LA - 4414 West 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90004.  Opening night reception on THURSDAY, May 26, 2011 from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. TULAY will be a safe, productive environment that will promote discussion and acceptance in the Filipino LGBTQ community to explore the causes that lead to youth suicide. Artists are tasked to explore cultural nuances relevant to the subject matter. Through their thought provoking art Barangay LA will engage the community to a solution-focused symposium which will close the gallery with a panel of faith based representatives, family members, LGBTQ & social service providers.
